The Department of Chemistry congratulates Professor Heather Desaire on receiving the April 2022 Sutton Family Research Impact Award! The Sutton Award is a monthly competition among chemistry faculty. Every month, the Chemistry Department Chair and Associate Chairs review the peer-reviewed papers published by chemistry faculty from the three previous months to select a winner. The recipient receives a $500 cash prize and is featured on the departmental website.

Peter Hierl: May 17, 1941 - February 18, 2022

The department mourns the loss of retired Prof. Peter Hierl. Peter began his independent career at KU in 1969 and taught in the department of chemistry for 45 years. Born in Brooklyn New York, Peter earned his undergraduate degree from MIT in 1963 and carried out his doctoral studies at Rice University, earning his Ph.D. in 1966.  His research focused on the gas phase reactions of ions and molecules and his collegiality and humor will be missed.  His obituary can be found on the Lawrence Journal-World's website.

Theodore (Ted) Kuwana, PhD: Aug 3, 1931–Jan 1, 2022

Dr. Ted Kuwana, 90, of Seattle, WA, died at Northwest Hospital after several weeks of pneumonia. He was the founding father of a new field in chemistry called spectroelectrochemistry, which was created by combining two well-known analytical techniques of electrochemistry and spectroscopy.
