Professor Jon Tunge named August 2024 Walter and Roy Cross Professional Service Award recipient

The Department of Chemistry congratulates Professor Jon Tunge on receiving the August 2024 Walter and Roy Cross Professional Service Award!

The Walter and Roy Cross Professional Service Award is a monthly competition among chemistry faculty. Every month, the Chemistry Department Chair and Associate Chairs review the peer-reviewed papers published by chemistry faculty from the three previous months to select a winner. The recipient receives a $1000 cash prize and is featured on the departmental website.

For a full list of winners, visit our Walter and Roy Cross Professional Service Award webpage.

The rising demand and financial costs of noble transition metal catalysts have emphasized the need for sustainable catalytic approaches. Over the past few years, base-metal catalysts have emerged as ideal candidates to replace their noble-metal counterparts because of their abundance and ease of handling. Despite greater than 60 years of significant advancements in areas of allylic coupling using precious transition metals, earth-abundant cobalt catalysts have only recently been reported as alternatives for allylic substitution reactions. The review article highlighted here describes the state-of-the-art for allylic alkylations at sp3-carbon centers mediated by cobalt. The design strategies for allylic coupling of C3+ units reveal classical approaches as well as modern photoredox methods. Finally, the current mechanistic understanding of these underdeveloped reactions is discussed along with outstanding mechanistic questions.
