Mapping Drives, Mac
Below is our guide on how to mount your drive to a macintosh.
- Before mounting your drive, in the menu bar, click “Finder” “Preferences” and on the “General” tab find the option “show these items on the desktop”. Check the box next to that option to have connected network shares displayed on the desktop.
- From the menu bar at top, select “Go” and then “ Connect to server “. In the “Connect to Server” dialog, on the “Server Address:” line enter:smb://resfs.home.ku.edu/groups/chem/general
- Click “Connect”.
- A login dialog will come up. Your local user name will be shown on the username line. Replace your local username with "home\username" where username is you KU online ID. Enter your KU password on the password line. Click “Connect”. The finder dialog with a connection to the KU server will come up and a new icon for the connection will appear on your desktop. You can browse to your personal and group drives from here.
If you want to be able to easily re-connect to the server without going back through the finder each time you restart your machine or lose connection in some other way, complete the below steps.
- Highlight the icon representing the mounted drive and then in finder select “FILE” make alias.
- This will create an alias of the mount point that will remain on your desktop even after the mount has been ejected.
- Simply click on the alias to re-connect. You will have to re-enter your password.
If you want the drive to be mapped each time you restart ( may be problematic for laptops but may be a good option for desktops):
- Open “System Preferences” “Accounts” then click on your user name.
- Drag the mount icon from the desktop into the “Login Items” tab to mount the drive(s) (if you drag both Home and Group icons into the tab) each time you log into the machine.
