Biography

Dr. Buchanan received her B.S. in chemistry from KU where she studied the electrochemistry of transition metal complexes in the laboratories of Professor Reynold Iwamoto and Professor Jacob Kleinberg.  Following her undergraduate studies, Dr. Buchanan attended the University of Wisconsin for graduate school where she became the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in their analytical chemistry program.  Dr. Buchanan joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in 1978 as a Research Scientist and served more than 40 years at ORNL in various leadership roles.  These included Director of the Chemical Sciences Division, Associate Laboratory Director for the Physical Sciences Directorate and finally, Deputy Director for Science and Technology.  Most recently, Dr. Buchanan has been on special assignment to the Department of Energy Office of Science as the Senior Technical Advisor to the Deputy Director of Science Programs.
