Interfacial properties at interfaces govern the interactions, assembly, and function of hybrid materials.  Our group is using scanning probe methods to investigate the properties of the interface at the nanoscale.  We use these methods to probe the topography, chemistry, adhesion, surface potential, and conductivity with nanoscale spatial resolution.  In addition, we have been developing methods to fabricate arrays of nanostructures using both scanning probe-based methods as well as particle lithography.  Examples of current areas of interest include (1) the investigation of peptide assembly at surfaces (2) the use of genetically engineering peptides tags for enzyme assembly (3) the precise fabrication of metal nanostructures  and (4) the interfacial electronic properties of materials upon small molecule adsorption.
