The Chemistry Department regrets to announce the passing of Emeritus Professor Shih-I Chu, who died unexpectedly on August 7, 2021 in Taipei at the age of 78. Shih-I was the Watkins Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at KU and the Director of the Kansas Center for Advanced Scientific Computing. He joined the faculty at KU in 1978 and was best known for his contributions in theoretical and computational quantum chemistry, optical physics, and quantum control. He served on the editorial boards of several prestigious journals, including the Journal of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics, Journal of Atomic and Molecular Sciences, and Advances in Applied Physics. Among his many awards, he was named an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow in 1980, John Simon Guggenheim Fellow in 1987, and received the Olin Petefish Award in Basic Sciences in 1988. He was a talented scholar, dedicated mentor, and valued colleague. He will be greatly missed at KU.
