For the past 27 years the Chemistry Department at the University of Kansas has been an REU site for the National Science Foundation sponsored Research Experience for Undergraduates. The program provides initial summer research experiences for 10-12 students in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment. Most participants are recruited from primarily undergraduate institutions with substantially limited or no research infrastructures.
