The research of Yong Zeng and Andrew Godwin is featured in the "Discover" tab of the 2015 Chancellor's Report from the University of Kansas. The section titled "Cellular reception" highlights their efforts in "creating a byte-sized biomedical testing device" that could be used to detect cancer sooner and in a less invasive way and ultimately increasing patients' survival rates. Recently, Godwin and Zeng received a $640,000 NIH grant from the National Cancer Institute to refine the “lab on a chip” technology.
Initial efforts were focused on using the chip to detect lung cancer, but now ovarian cancer is a possibility. Eventually, they hope that these chips can be used beyond the scope of detecting cancer and be adapted to detect other diseases.
